About This Painting
Uncertainty and stress is part of the human condition. Yet now, in the midst of a global pandemic, the not-so-out-of-the-ordinary stressors of life have become amplified. COVID-19 has left citizens of the world trying to maintain their balance as new challenges and uncertainties present themselves almost daily. In this dark time, it can be comforting to seek a glimmer of light in the midst of the storm. That's why I included twinkling stars over this stormy sea; a reminder that even when dark clouds cast a shadow over our world, light always finds a way in—and that light can sustain us through the hardest of times. Whatever your challenges may be today, my wish for us all is that calm seas, light-filled days, and starry nights are not far off.
Artist's Note
My paintings often reflect my emotional state and this one, Dark and Stormy from my continuing Series of the Sea, is no exception. Life, like the sea, is often unpredictable; storms develop then pass, giving way to calm and peaceful waters—at least for a time. These weather-like extremes have impacted my life more often than usual over the past year. Together, my husband and I have faced uncertainty in awaiting test results to gauge how well his cancer treatments are working. At the same time, I have been exploring with my doctors new medications that have some very unpleasant side effects in an attempt to better control my lupus. Dark and Stormy was a cathartic creation and a good reminder that while it may not always be visible, light always finds its way back into our lives.
